Every year during the month of September and October there are similar news headlines in the every corner of world that is the declaration of nominations and announcement of winners for Nobel Prize for that year. This news creates immense excitement in the world irrespective of age and country. Let’s discus about the award and the scientist whom world announced as the ‘Merchant of death’.

                              Let’s start the article with the ending line of first paragraph, for that we should have little knowledge about scientist Alfred Nobel. Alfred Nobel was born on 21 October 1833 into an engineering family in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a chemist, engineer, and industrialist, his maximum wealth was because of his 355 inventions. He had the expertise in making of smoke less explosives; he served his works to armed forces. Despite all of his inventions he was very much popular for his inventions of Dynamite. In those days dynamites were used in wars that results many deaths and injuries. Once he was astonished by reading his own death in a French news paper headlined as ‘The merchant of Death is dead’, actually it was Alfred's brother Ludvig who had died; the obituary was eight years premature. The article disconcerted Nobel and made him apprehensive about how he would be remembered. This article changed Nobel’s heart and forced him to work for humanity. In his will paper he mentioned about the award. The awards are awarded to "those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind."

Alfred Nobel’s will

 

                          On 10 December 1896, Alfred Nobel died due to cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 63 years. He wrote several wills during his lifetime. In his last will he described about the Nobel Prize. He wanted to create a series of prizes for those who confer the "greatest benefit on mankind" in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. He strictly wanted that Nobel peace prize would be given by Norwegian committee. Alfred Nobel donated his 94% of assets to create fund for Nobel Prize. The Nobel committees were made after the will was passed. The executors of the will, Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist, formed the Nobel Foundation to take care of the fortune and to organize the awarding of prizes.

 


                        Nobel Prize is awarded in only six categories despite this Nobel Prize is unequivocally the best prize till now. Nobel laureates are getting a different level of respect and love from people all over the world. From making explosive for army to change of thought about world and humanity creates the most prestigious in the world, the award still now serving its purpose.
